    Dr. Wright completed a B.A. Honors-Economics (Calgary) and an M.A. (Political Economy-Toronto) prior to obtaining his M.D. degree from the University of Calgary. He completed residency training in family medicine at the Holy Cross Hospital in Calgary.

    As Regional Associate Dean, Island Medical Program (UBC) Dr. Wright provides strategic leadership of the undergraduate and postgraduate medical programs throughout Vancouver Island including the development and implementation of initiatives and policies that support continuting growth of medical education. He also has the responsibility for developing health related research capacity and health related institutional research relationships on Vancouver Island on behalf of UBC. As well, Dr. Wright is Head of the Division of Medical Sciences at the University of Victoria. He has recently been appointed Executive Medical Director – Academic Integration for the Island Health Authority. By virtue of holding these three positions he is well positioned to increase the research profile of UBC on Vancouver Island.

    Prior to his appointment as Regional Associate Dean in July 2014, Dr. Wright served in various capacities with the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Calgary, most recently as Associate Dean, Undergraduate Medical Education and as Professor in the Department of Family Medicine.

    On the national level, Dr. Wright is a councilor with the Medical Council of Canada (MCC) and currently serves on the council executive. He is also a very active member on Association of Faculties of Medicine of Canada initiatives. In addition, Dr. Wright’s interest in medical education extends beyond the local and national level. He has a particular interest in international medical education and in the past has served as a consultant on curriculum development projects in Tajikistan, Tanzania, Nepal and Laos.

    Dr. Wright has published over 50 peer-reviewed articles focused on medical education, including articles on career choices of undergraduate medical students, assessment and evaluation of learning outcomes for medical students and the use of simulation in clinical training.
